The First Graders in Kathy Hewe’s and Mary Bissell’s class challenged themselves to find something to eat in every color of the rainbow. They were surprised to discover new tasty treats after vowing that they “hated celery and peppers.” Being the newly minted writers that they are, most of the records they kept were words in invented spelling. (I hardly saw any drawing!) You could hear them saying each sound of the words they were writing aloud as they grappled with their new form of communicating. So exciting to witness! I have been an elementary teacher at the Westminster Center School for 30 years. For most of those years, I maintained a garden as part of my teaching curriculum resource. Now I am the Garden Coordinator for all of the Westminster Center School classrooms.
